Fic: Hospitality (SGA, R)

Title: Hospitality
Author: kbk
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Rating: R
Summary: An off-world mission takes an unexpected turn.
Notes: This is me attempting both dark!fic - I'm an old hand at angst, but that's different - and a much barer style than usual - dialogue and physical description only. The bulk of the fic was written for [info]sga_flashfic's slave challenge. I left an ambiguous ending and was asked for more. Thus, the continuations in the comments to this post. Each thread is a divergence: thus, the comments which reply directly to the post continue from the main body of the fic, and each comment thereafter continues from the comment to which it is a response. If that makes sense. Different threads obviously have different levels of detail and of pain. If this format is unreadable, tell me and I'll try to fix up something better.
Feedback: Here, please.
Warnings: Abuse - physical and sexual. Killing. Brainwashing. General bastardry. Death. A little gore. A few bad words, but if you can't cope with that...

"We really... uh, Major? Seriously, we should just go back now, I can get some work done, you can take the rest of the day off... We don't want our, uh, not-so-hospitable former hosts realising we're still on their land... Ford, Teyla, help me out here."

"Orders are orders." Ford's eyes are shadowed.

"We will follow where the Major leads." Teyla does not smile.

"Thank you. And I am leading this way." Sheppard points straight ahead of them. "To the city beyond the hills."

Rodney stumbles, stares, then hurries to keep up. "Uh. Why? I mean, fine, send someone to meet with them, but how do you even know they're there? And what good will it do anyway if..."

"McKay. Zip it. We're going this way." Sheppard keeps his eyes forward.

"But why? I mean. I mean, why?" Rodney gesticulates, movements sharp and agitated.

"Because I say so, and I'm in charge, now shut up."

"You don't seriously expect that to satisfy me, do you, because..."

Sheppard hits McKay across the face. McKay falls. His lip bleeds.

"Don't make me do that again." Sheppard is smiling.

Rodney watches as Sheppard turns away from him and walks on.

Teyla follows Sheppard.

Ford nudges McKay with one foot. "Move it."

Rodney scrambles to his feet and trots forward, eyes fixed on the ground and fingers twitching frantically by his side.

The four walk in silence for several minutes.

Rodney tilts his chin up. "Major. You have a duty to Atlantis and the people under your command."

Sheppard smiles pleasantly. "I wasn't aware you understood the concept of command. Or of duty. Since you do: I am in command and it is your duty to do as I say. It's not difficult for the others."

Teyla and Ford smirk.

"Ah. Sorry." The others wait. Rodney blinks for a few seconds. "Sorry... sir."

Sheppard nods approbation. The four walk on.

A little later, they stop to refill their water bottles at a small stream. Rodney is slow, holding his bottle under long after the bubbles have stopped.

Rodney stands slowly as well, but keeps pace thereafter.

"Major. That citrus tea the chief gave us, I think it was drugged, because I didn't..."

Rodney falls to his knees before he realises Sheppard has hit him again.

"Chief Ergan is a good man."

"His people chased us out with spears!"

"Keep walking."

The sun sets when they are high in the hills. They make camp. Rodney is not assigned a watch.

The radio crackles on as Teyla builds a fire.

"You're late, Major Sheppard."

Sheppard dons his charming grin, his charming tones. "Sorry, Dr Weir. We got a little side-tracked, looks like we won't be coming back just yet."

"I see. Care to explain a little further?"

"I don't know, Elizabeth. McKay started muttering about energy signatures and next thing I know he's halfway to the river. I swear, one of these days I'm gonna put a leash on him."

"That could be misinterpreted, Major. About these energy readings, perhaps Rodney could give me some details?"

"Ah. Best not. He's, ah, sulking."

"Oh. Oh dear. Well, remember we need him. And I expect you back here in twenty-four hours, understood?"

"Understood. Sheppard out."

Ford waits for a ten-count, and then releases Rodney.

"You lied to her!" Rodney is red-faced and sweating.

"Yes." Sheppard is expressionless.

"Are we ever going back?"

"If we survive."

"If we... what the fuck? What the fuck is wrong with you, you..."

Rodney curses as Ford pins him again, curses until he runs out of breath to do so.

He does not wake until the morning.

Half an hour of walking brings them through the highest passes. The city below reaches up into the foothills, but it is composed of huts very like those of Ergan's people. They surround a single gleaming spire, hundreds of feet in height.

It takes over an hour of further walking to approach the city, and once they are close enough to be seen, they keep to cover. A path leads to a metal archway not quite as large as the Stargate. The outermost huts lie perhaps a hundred feet to the other side. A few guards sit on either side of a wooden fence which stretches across the archway.

Sheppard and Ford shoot the men, neatly and efficiently.

The four of them disguise themselves with the outer layers of the men's clothing. They thread their way through the narrow streets, always heading for the spire.

There are more guards at the bottom of the tower: these have their throats slit. A woman placing a flower on the pile nearby also dies.

At the top of the tower is a single item. It is a shield generator.

"OK, I thought we weren't going to go removing people's shields any more, that's what you said."

"Disable it."

"Why? And what's with the killing? I mean, seriously, that's not... not good, and you'll hate yourself when you're back to normal and I don't understand..."

Sheppard hits him.

Rodney stands firm. "You should be back by now."

"Disable the shield."

"No."

Teyla catches Rodney's left hand in both of her own. "Your knowledge is necessary. Your fingers are not."

She bends back the pinky until it snaps.

When Rodney's sobs have subsided, Ford crouches beside him.

"You have toes, too. Ribs. Lots of little bones in your hands and your feet. Then there's all the soft bits. They let you get creative." Ford chuckles.

Teyla smiles.

Sheppard wipes the fresh blood from Rodney's lip.

Rodney sighs. "Why are we doing this? Why attack them like this? I'll disable the shield, just... tell me why."

Sheppard nods, and the three of them begin to speak.

"The Wraith do not Take from this city."

"They cast Ergan out."

"They cast his people out."

"They deserve to die."

"They will all die."

"We will kill them."

"As many as we can."

"We will kill them."

"They deserve to die."

"They will all die."

"At our hands or those of the Wraith."

"They will die."

Rodney shakes his head.

John takes Rodney's left hand and snaps his ring finger.

Ford frowns. "Sir, I'm sure C4 would do the job."

"Rodney'll do it. Won't you?" John's hand in Rodney's hair forces him to nod. "There, now."

John guides Rodney to the machine, and settles him in front of it with everything he might need. He sends Teyla and Ford out into the city, then sits at the window, rifle in hand.

Hours later, there are crowds screaming in the streets. Rodney's left sleeve is tied to his chest. He removes another crystal from inside the generator, and an unnoticed subsonic vibration stops.

"You did it, Rodney." John smiles and pulls Rodney to his feet. Rodney gulps for air, swaying.

"God, those sounds you make." John presses close to Rodney, pushes Rodney's good hand against the bulge in John's pants. His own right hand traces the bruises on Rodney's cheek, and when Rodney gasps John pushes a thumb into his mouth.

There are gunshots below. John curses. "Later, I'll fuck this mouth. I've dreamed of it. Making you shut up for once. Shut up and take it. God. Fuck you till you pass out. Maybe even after. But first, I have to kill them. So later. Yeah."

Sheppard runs down the stairs, and soon the gunshots sound almost constant.

Rodney curls up among his scattered kit, cradling his injured hand.

He watches the doorway and waits.

The people learn to be wary, and the shooting slows.

Eventually the sky darkens. Rodney watches the sun dip below the horizon, and clutches his radio.

Dr Weir calls. Rodney answers.

"Elizabeth, he lied to you before, they're drugged and brainwashed and they're killing everyone, they... please, you have to believe me, you have to send a team, a Jumper, go over the hills and there's a city, we're at the spire. Hurry. Please."

"Rodney? Is that you?"

"Dr Weir, McKay's been affected by the energy we were after, he's talking nonsense. A Jumper would be good, though, we can't move him. Follow the river, upstream."

"Lt Ford. Where's the Major?"

"He's busy killing people! Send two Jumpers if you must, you have them, you have pilots, you... can't you hear the gunshots? They're killing. They're mad. They're... oh, shit!"

Rodney drops his radio.

He casts about for a weapon. The best thing he finds is a length of pipe, which he can just about wield one-handed. He stands by the side of the doorway and waits.

The sky darkens further, and the tinny voices from his radio stop.

There is a tap-THUMP, tap-THUMP, tap-THUMP coming up the stairs. It grows louder. And louder. Then it stops.

"Rodney. You're not gonna hurt me, are you?"

Rodney doesn't answer.

"I'm your friend. Who else takes you flying? Hm? Who's saved your life too many times to count? C'mon, Rodney. Let me see you."

Tue, May. 31st, 2005 11:09 pm (UTC)

Rodney steps into the doorway. He raises the pipe.

John shoots him in the head.

Tue, May. 31st, 2005 11:13 pm (UTC)
[info]kbk

Rodney drops the pipe and walks to the machine. He kneels beside it, leans against it.

John hobbles towards him - tap-THUMP, tap-THUMP.

"Someone got a lucky shot." He indicates the broken-off arrow in his thigh. "It'll heal."

Tue, May. 31st, 2005 11:27 pm (UTC)

John stands before Rodney and pulls the other man's head against his belly.

"I don't want to hurt you, Rodney. Don't make me."

John unzips his pants. He has been partially aroused all day.

Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2005 06:15 pm (UTC)

He pushes Rodney's head down, strokes his hair, feels his breath on bare skin. "Suck me, Rodney."

Rodney closes his eyes, opens his mouth, runs his lips along John's hardening cock.

John hums a little, rests some of his weight on Rodney's shoulder. Rodney runs his good hand up John's thigh.

He pulls at the arrow, and John screams.

"You fucking..." John punches Rodney to the floor and then clutches at his thigh. "You little bastard. You stupid little fuck. I'm gonna break you." He kicks Rodney in the stomach with considerable force, despite his injury. "You've done what we needed and now you're mine and you are so very fucked, you stupid cocksucking cunt."

Rodney is still gasping for breath. "Fuck. You."

"Other way round, dear Rodney. Hands and knees, or it's back to the fingers."

John rapes his scientist until Rodney can't scream any more.

Rodney is naked and bleeding when the Puddlejumper arrives. He is passive. He does not react to a snarling John Sheppard in handcuffs.

Dr Beckett cannot find a way to counteract the effects of the drug. Dr Heightmeyer cannot find a way to counteract the effects of the mental programming.

Maj Sheppard and Lt Ford are eventually sent back to Earth and committed to the psychiatric ward of a military hospital.

Teyla Emmagen escapes from Atlantis, and travels from world to world as a warrior for hire.

Dr McKay produces several brilliant papers in theoretical physics and astrophysics. He is nominated for the Nobel Prize, but commits suicide before a decision is made.

Rodney swallows and lowers his head. He flickers his tongue against John's cock. John curves his hand around Rodney's skull and presses him gently forward. Rodney slides his lips over the head of John's cock.

"Mmm, that's nice. Let me..." John rocks his hips in an easy rhythm and watches Rodney's eyelashes flutter. Rodney uses his tongue and not his teeth and follows John's directions.

John strokes Rodney's cheek. "Yeah. I shoulda done this months ago. Come to your room and put you on your knees. Did you even know you wanted it?"

Rodney is hard. His good hand clenches into a fist. He keeps sucking.

"Oh Rodney, what a big mouth you have. What a usable mouth. But you're not a wolf, no, that's me." John sighs, and runs one hand up his own torso.

"I don't usually talk this much, but I trust you. And I'd kill you if you betrayed me. Slowly. All those little bones, snap crackle pop. Such fun. Oh yeah."

John wraps his hand around the base of his cock, pushes up against Rodney's mouth. "I could do this forever. Mmm, 's good."

Rodney's jaw begins to ache.

John keeps talking, and orgasms while explaining a complex bondage fantasy. He sits awkwardly, and reaches out to press a hand against Rodney's cock. Three strokes, and Rodney comes in his pants, blushing fiercely.

John grins. "We have got to keep doing this. Next time you can be in charge." He sprawls backwards on the floor. "Wake me when the 'jumper shows up."

Rodney wraps his arms around himself, and stares as John snores.

Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2005 10:36 pm (UTC)

"Oh? You think we'll survive, now?"

"Well, I will. My guardian angel works overtime. Yours, though, seems to be missing in action."

Rodney doesn't look up. "Is this the, uh, service me or die speech? Because it's been done."

"You're funny, Rodney. I like that."

Rodney shakes his head.

John grabs Rodney's hand and snaps another finger. "I'm not going to kill you, Rodney. I promise."

Rodney sobs dryly.

"Ergan promised the four of us could stay together. We'll have the pick of everything in the city."

"Corpses, then?"

Another finger snaps. Rodney screams.

"I think we'll stay here, for now. I like the view."

"Jesus, John, think! This isn't you!"

John stands and very deliberately steps on Rodney's left hand. When Rodney can see again, Sheppard is gone.

Two hours later, a team from Atlantis arrives and conducts an assault. Ford is killed. Teyla and Sheppard are both injured and stunned.

Rodney's hand requires reconstructive surgery, but the expedition does not have a specialist, and he only recovers partial functionality.

Teyla returns to her people and sends an official liaison to Atlantis.

Sheppard goes back to work. By the time he recovers his memory of how Rodney was injured, the Daedalus has been and gone, and McKay has transferred back to Area 51.

Their team is irrevocably destroyed.

Thu, Jun. 2nd, 2005 09:01 pm (UTC)

Rodney stays silent. He hears the tap-THUMP of John's steps grow closer.

Teyla appears in front of him, disarming him efficiently. He swears, and slides down the wall to huddle on the floor.

Sat, Jun. 4th, 2005 02:13 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

Teyla kicks him in the side. "That was most unwise, Doctor McKay."

Sheppard smirks.

Teyla yanks him upright. "We will leave this place."

They creep through the city. From time to time they encounter other people - these people do not survive. When a Puddlejumper flies overhead, they take shelter: Ford and Teyla in one building, Sheppard with his arm round Rodney's neck in another.

They leave the city, walking away from the Stargate. They find a farm and claim it by killing the owners.

Sheppard uses Rodney as a crutch, a punchbag and a whore. Sometimes Ford and Teyla join in.

A few months later, the four of them take over Ergan's village. The month after that, they claim the remnants of the city. Rodney fixes the shield, and sucks John's cock in celebration.

They are kings.

"Naughty boy, Rodney." Sheppard shakes his head slowly.

"I can't let you... let you do this."

"One life for many, is that it? Admirable. But you've crumbled before. One little knife. One little finger. What should it be this time?"

The radio is squawking. Sheppard smashes it.

"I'm sorry. Sir, I'm... John, I'm sorry but this is... Intolerable."

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 12:55 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

Rodney pushes himself up onto the window ledge.

"Your death won't help anyone, Rodney. I'll just go back downstairs and keep going. Come here."

"I fixed the shield."

"No, you didn't. You're waiting for help. But even if it comes, it will take time."

"If you remember this, when you get back to normal, then remember it's not your fault. And I'm sorry."

Rodney falls.

Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2005 08:09 pm (UTC)

"This is the right thing to do. They're evil."

Rodney gapes for a second. "You know Elizabeth will send someone here, just in case. You should just stop now, things will go better."

John shoves Rodney back, and his head bounces off the wall. "Don't tell me what to do."

Rodney relaxes into unconsciousness. By the time he wakes, a Jumper has arrived from Atlantis and the rest of his team have been captured at the cost of several injuries and one death. The other Jumper arrives, and is used to transport the wounded.

A month later, the team go on another mission. They work very hard to make sure everything goes as normal.

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 12:57 am (UTC)

Eventually, the shooting stops.

A little while later, a figure appears in the door.

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 02:01 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

"Rodney? Are you all right?"

"Major?"

Sheppard steps further into the room. "I think you can call me John now. Or bastard, that would work."

Rodney sits straighter. "You're back?"

John stares at the floor. "Yeah."

"And you remember, right? I think it was the tea, because I didn't drink it, and of course I can fix this, but... Oh. You remember." Rodney frowns.

"Yeah."

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 02:09 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

"It wasn't you. It wasn't your fault. OK?"

John doesn't move.

"Damn it. John. Come here. Sit with me."

Rodney clears a space, and John sits.

"This whole thing sucks."

"Sucks giant rocks."

"It wasn't your fault."

"My mission, my fuckup."

"Stubborn bastard."

"That's me."

"I don't blame you for this. For any of it."

"You should."

"I don't."

They sit side-by-side, waiting for someone to come to take them home.

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 02:42 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

"Teyla? Ford?"

"Downstairs. The, uh. The people outside."

"Ah. Not too happy."

"No."

"I can put the shield back up. Then we can go."

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 02:42 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

"Go where?"

"Home. Find a recognisable place, Teyla can run for the Stargate and request transport."

"Go home. Good plan."

"Thank you."

John stands and waits as Rodney reverses his work on the machine. It doesn't take long. John collects Rodney's equipment; his eyeline does not move above Rodney's knees.

They walk down the stairs together, to where the rest of their team is waiting.

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 02:43 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

"The people might not let us."

Rodney starts to fix the machine. "We have superior firepower. They will."

"We definitely have superior firepower." John's hands are trembling. He clenches them into fists and the movement stops.

"They, apparently, have superior brainwashing techniques."

John gapes. Blinks. Shakes his head. "Yeah."

Sat, Jun. 4th, 2005 03:15 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

Rodney finishes his repairs, collects his equipment, and follows John downstairs.

Teyla and Ford are watching people scuttling past outside. Neither of them return Rodney's brief smile.

"They're avoiding us for now, sir."

"That reminds me, Sheppard, I'm never calling you sir again."

"I wouldn't want you to."

"Good. That settled, if they're avoiding us, shouldn't we get going before they decide to attack? Chop chop, people, let's go!"

Rodney chivvies them all past the bodies and through the city and into the foothills before he lets them stop. They set up a small camp, and when Elizabeth calls that night, Rodney answers.

"As it happens, I wasn't sulking - not that I ever do something so undignified - I was pinned to the ground by a certain young Marine because the rest of my team were out of their minds on drugs. I really think we should institute some sort of safety protocol in case this happens again, I mean, we did not have the most pleasant of days here."

"I'm sorry to hear that, Rodney. Can I assume that your team has now returned to, ah, normality?"

"As normal as it gets, yes, but would you mind sending someone to get us? I, for one, do not want to walk back. And tell Carson to have some heavy-duty painkillers ready for me. Oh, and Kate should definitely be in on the debriefing. And. What else?"

"Rodney. It's all right. We can talk this through when you get home. I'm just glad things have turned out this well. I'll send Miller out now."

"Thank you." He smiles.

The others look at him dully. Rodney frowns. "This is one of the better scenarios I came up with, all right? This is, this is a whole lot better than."

John meets his eyes and looks pained.

"We'll be home soon. We can put this behind us."

Nobody looks entirely convinced, but they nod anyway.

"Home soon."

"Rodney."

"Major."

"It looks like later has arrived."

Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2005 12:51 am (UTC)

Sheppard strides across the floor and crouches in front of Rodney. Rodney glares at him. Sheppard grins. He tangles his fingers in Rodney's hair and pulls his head down, forcing him to scramble to support himself with his good hand.

"This will be fun." Sheppard rocks onto his knees and straightens, unfastening his pants with his free hand. He's hard.

His free hand goes to Rodney's jaw, pulling his mouth open and hooking two fingers over his teeth. Rodney huffs and squirms and glares.

Sheppard fucks Rodney's mouth. He pushes into Rodney's spasming throat, and Rodney's eyes water uncontrollably. He waits until Rodney's eyes roll back from oxygen deprivation before he pulls out.

He does it again. And again. And again.

Rodney glares as hard as he can. His sight is blurred. His jaw aches. His lip is bleeding again.

Sheppard groans, deep and harsh. His hips move faster. His eyes meet Rodney's, and he grins sharply.

He comes down Rodney's throat.

Sheppard sits back on his heels, releases Rodney's jaw to tuck himself back into his pants.

"I can't believe you just did that." Rodney's voice is raspy, his face blotchy and streaked with moisture.

Sheppard shakes Rodney's head. "It felt damn good. Now, I have to go back downstairs, so Ford can go play. Unless you'd like him to keep you company?"

Rodney flinches and lowers his eyes. Sheppard lets him go and stands.

"You be good, now. And clean yourself up. I'll be back."

Sheppard leaves. Rodney lies on the floor and shudders.

Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2005 02:47 pm (UTC)

Some time later, Teyla comes up the stairs. "Doctor McKay?"

Rodney is sitting as far away from the doorway as possible.

"May I check on your wounds?"

Rodney blinks rapidly, then raises his good hand to his mouth. "You're, uh. You're back to normal."

"Yes, Doctor McKay. I owe you many apologies."

"No, it's... Ergan's fault. Ford and, and, and the Major, they're, what are they doing?"

"They are watching in case of attack. May I?" Teyla walks towards him, pausing briefly when Rodney flinches. He smiles awkwardly at her, and she kneels down beside him.

She takes his left hand gently. "I truly regret the pain I have caused you. Soon we shall return to Atlantis, where these will be set."

She wipes his face with the tail of her shirt and water from her bottle, and makes no comment. She apologises when she puts too much pressure on a bruise. She sits next to him and breathes calmly.

A little later, Teyla helps Rodney rebuild the machine.

When a Jumper arrives with a team of Marines, Rodney sticks close to Teyla. He doesn't look anyone in the eye.

On the flight home, nobody speaks. On arrival at Atlantis, Rodney is sedated and taken to medbay. Teyla goes with him. Ford follows behind.

Major John Sheppard puts himself in the brig.

The next day the whole story comes out. Sheppard is released. All four are relieved of duty pending psychiatric evaluation.

Rodney, on being allowed out of medbay, heads straight for his lab. He submerges himself in work, snaps at anyone who offers any kind of sympathy, and is even more of a tyrant than before. He refuses to talk to Dr Heightmeyer.

Sheppard complies with the evaluations, and then spends as much time off-world as he can, often putting himself in dangerous situations. One day he does not return.

Dr McKay does not attend the memorial service.

Rodney wipes his face. He starts to put the machine back together.

Sheppard comes back a little while before sundown. "What'cha doin'?"

"Fixing this."

"Don't."

"All right."

John pats Rodney's head. "Good boy. Now listen, Ford thinks we're about done here, so come on downstairs."

Rodney treads wearily down the flights upon flights of stairs. "What happens next?"

"I'll figure something out, don't worry. In the meantime, we'll have some fun." Sheppard keeps going down to the third floor, where there is one small room. "Take your clothes off and wait here." He leaves.

Rodney shivers. He sits on some blankets and tries to unlace his boots. He hasn't got the second one off when Sheppard returns.

"I'm disappointed."

"I'm having trouble because of my fingers. I'm sorry."

"You will be." Sheppard opens his pants, and Rodney shifts to kneel in front of him. "That won't help you, you know."

John's fingers are tight in Rodney's hair, and dig into the flesh beneath his jaw. Rodney chokes on John's cock. He passes out, and John keeps fucking until he comes.

He has to slap Rodney a few times to make him start breathing again. He pulls off Rodney's second boot and throws a blanket over him.

"I'll figure something out. It'll be great."

It is one of the people of the city, with an arrow aimed at Rodney.

"You are one of them."

"Yes."

"You have broken our angel."

"Yes."

"Fix her."

The native calls something incomprehensible down the stairs. Rodney replaces the first of many components.

Wed, Jun. 1st, 2005 03:10 am (UTC)
[info]kbk

He's only halfway done when a different native kneels beside him.

"You are hurt."

"Yes."

"I will heal." He pulls Rodney's fingers straight, one after the other, and by the time Rodney recovers full consciousness the fingers have been splinted and his hand is being wrapped in soft material.

"Thank you."

"I heal you. You heal our angel."

"That's what I'm doing."

Thu, Jun. 2nd, 2005 05:19 pm (UTC)

"You broke her."

"I did."

"Now you heal her."

"Is there a point to this? Because sitting here talking isn't going to fix anything."

The healer sits in silence for a few minutes and watches Rodney work.

"They broke you. But you are one of them."

"They, uh, weren't exactly themselves at the time. Ergan drugged them."

"Ergan must die."

"I'm not about to argue with you on that one. But. Um. Are they dead? My friends?"

"Yes."

"I figured as much."

Sat, Jun. 4th, 2005 02:41 am (UTC)

"Your friends were warriors."

"They were."

"You are not."

"No. Is there a point to all this? Because I'm trying to work here."

"Your people met Ergan and were betrayed."

"Yes!"

"You came through the Great Circle?"

"Yep."

"You came to trade."

"Would you... Yes. Trade. Offering technological assistance and certain supplies in exchange for fresh food."

"We would trade."

"Really?"

"Now our people are less, our food is more than sufficient."

"Jesus. Um. Yes. Right. That would... I'll fix this, all right? And then I'll get in touch with our leader and she makes the decisions about trading."

"I understand."

The trade relationship with these people proves to be mutually beneficial, and the food appetising.

Rodney sticks to MREs.

Somebody smacks him across the back of the head - lightly enough - and Rodney doesn't speak again.

The healer offers him something to drink, "for the pain," and he gulps it down. It is bitter.

He sighs as he inserts the last component.

It doesn't work.

Rodney frowns in concentration, then starts to undo his work. At least two voices start to yell at him.

"I have to try again." He is dizzy and queasy. He works on.

After the sun sets, they bring him food and water, and a little later a blanket. He sleeps, with a guard in the doorway.

He tries to fix the machine through all of the next day, and the day after that. On the third day, there is a commotion. Another team of Atlanteans has arrived.

"They aren't here to hurt you, I promise, just let me talk to them. I'll explain, I will, I don't want anyone else to die."

He walks down the stairs for the first time. Outside is a small group of Atlantis military, surrounded by hostile local people. Nearby walls show bulletholes and brownish stains. Rodney steps outside, just a little.

"Doctor McKay! Are you all right? Can you tell us what happened?"

"I'm fine. I believe the other members of my team were brainwashed and ordered to kill as many of this city's inhabitants as possible."

A mutter runs through the crowd.

"We'll negotiate for your release. Are they treating you well?"

"I'm fine."

"You're injured, Doctor."

"Oh, this is from before. Really, it's fine."

They call back and forth for a few minutes, then Rodney's guard tugs on his arm. He turns to go back inside, and sees three corpses propped against the wall, recognisable only by their uniforms. He staggers away and vomits.

He allows himself to be led back up the stairs. He agrees to stay until the machine is repaired, and the next day Zelenka joins him with diagnostic equipment.

When Radek arrives, he swears profusely in Czech, and then settles down to work and gossips interminably. He does not mention the mission.

Together they find the problem and repair the shield.

They are respectfully escorted down the stairs. Six soldiers are waiting - two to carry each body bag.

The streets have been swept clean, but there are still bulletholes and marks of the odd explosion. Rodney fixes his eyes on Radek's feet.

The Jumper waiting outside the archway takes them all home. Rodney sits behind the copilot, and concentrates on breathing.

"No. You will stay."

Rodney watches as small figures in grey carry away four bodybags. He cries silently.

The healer brings him more of the bitter drink, and makes him wiggle his fingers.

Rodney tries again.

Another day passes. Rodney stares at the machine. He doesn't move.

A man arrives and sends his guard away.

"You will serve our angel."

"I will?"

"You will."

The man sets down a bundle of clothing and clasps a chain around Rodney's neck.

It is another week before Rodney notices his tiny, vital error. The shield is restored. The people cheer, and pile flowers at the base of the tower. Some of them are brought up to him.

He is not allowed to leave the tower. Sometimes he has visitors.

The rest of his days are spent in lonely contemplation.

Days pass.

"I can't fix your angel. I don't know what's wrong."

"Try."

"I can't fix her."

"There is no chance?"

"None."

"Then you will be her sacrifice."

Rodney dies with a smile on his face.

It takes time to do the repairs. He can't stop his hands shaking. Finally the thrum of the shield returns.

"Done." Rodney sits on his heels and waits.

The guard calls out once more. A reply echoes up the stairwell.

"Penance."

The knife which cuts Rodney's throat is not sharp. It takes three passes to kill him.

"Major! I found him!"

Ford walks in, looks down at Rodney with a small frown. "Doctor McKay. You hurt?"

"I. Uh. You don't remember?"

"No. It looks like we did some damage, and we've lost at least a day. Do you remember anything?"

"I'm fairly sure the tea Chief Ergan gave us made you susceptible to brainwashing. I went along with it, hoping the drug would wear off, but then we got here and the, the."

Ford helps Rodney to his feet. "We got here and what?"

"The killing started."

Ford nods slowly, face sombre. He looks around. "What's this?"

"It's a shield generator. Kept them safe, hence outcasts getting pissed. Um. I should fix it."

Rodney settles himself in front of the machine again. Ford stands by the window and mutters into his radio.

Sheppard and Teyla join them after an hour or so.

Rodney does not turn away from the machine until it is fixed. Then he stands and sways and tries to catch himself with his left hand.

He wakes up dangling over Ford's shoulder, being carried down the stairs.

"Hey! Put me down!"

"Doctor McKay!" Ford sets him on his feet. "I'm so sorry I didn't notice you were hurt. The Major was really mad."

"Huh. Someone straightened them."

"Teyla. She said she'd done it before."

"She's certainly snapped at least one."

Ford gawps.

"Leave it for debriefing, Lieutenant. None of you were exactly pleasant while brainwashed."

"Right. Uh. Lead the way, then."

Rodney does. He makes his way through the city without more than glancing at the damage. He looks longer at the small pale faces flitting through the shadows.

Debriefing takes days. For most of it, Rodney is the only one who can contribute.

He misses out a few details.

"Um. I don't... think..."

Ford nods. "I wonder why we split up."

"Well, none of you are exactly qualified to work on this."

"You're not exactly qualified for. Well. What's been going on down there."

"Which is?"

"It looks like we, um. We've been killing people."

"Oh. Well, you've been, ah, under the influence of something which obviously, ah, affected your brains. So, you know, temporary insanity or whatever." Rodney shifts his seat. "I should probably, um, fix this thing."

"Don't take too long, all right? We're lost in hostile territory. And, hey, how do you know you weren't trying to fix it before?"

"I recognise my own work, Lieutenant, and I also know what this machine is and does, and that is generate a shield to protect the city, though it's powered by some kind of renewable energy as opposed to a ZPM, which would be interesting if not for the fact that I suspect it's unique to this locale for reasons too complex to interest you."

"Jeez. Calm down, Doc."

"In case you hadn't noticed, I have two broken fingers. Let me work."

"Hold on, there's morphine in the first aid kits, enough to take the edge off. Show me."

Rodney lifts his hand in the air with a sigh.

"Oh. That's nasty. That looks deliberate. Man." Ford sticks the syringe into Rodney's arm. Rodney winces. Ford grins a little.

Rodney gets to work without a word.

The city is eerily silent as they walk towards the hills. The metallic scent of blood taints the air. Here and there are corpses slumped on the ground, red puddles drying to brown around them.

Insects are feasting.

There's a knife which they all recognise sticking out of one man's back, but they pass without comment.

Once they are out of the city, Teyla stops to pray. Ford kneels nearby. Rodney looks back. John looks forward.

"I think I'm glad I don't remember." John's voice is quiet.

The others nod in agreement.

Rodney does not speak up when they drift off course - the misdirection would have added several hours to their journey, but Dr Weir contacts them and he requests transport. Even back on Atlantis, he sticks to his lie.

The other three never remember. Rodney never forgets.

Ford leaves, and Sheppard arrives. He paces as Rodney works. After ten minutes, he snaps.

"I want to know who did that to you."

"Um. That's nice for you."

"You're lying, aren't you? You remember."

Rodney swallows audibly. "What makes you say that?"

"Maybe it's just a hunch. Maybe I know you. Maybe I looked at the evidence and that's the best explanation."

Rodney keeps working.

"It was me, wasn't it? I beat you up. I broke your fingers. Did I do anything else?"

John sinks to the floor next to Rodney. "Rodney. Tell me. Please."

Rodney twirls a crystal in his hand, searching for the right connection. "The visible bruises and one of the fingers. That's you. The other finger was Teyla, there's a couple of bruises and strains from Ford. It's only been a day. You lied to Elizabeth, she pushed back our deadline to tonight and she thinks we travelled in the opposite direction."

"Rodney. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Don't bother, Major, I forgave you already. Though the use of chocolate as a peace offering is sorely under-rated."

John chokes, chuckles. "We good, then?"

"We're good."

Months later, Rodney realises he was lying.

After a while, more shots sound from further away. P90s. Wraith stunners.

Rodney listens as they draw closer. He stands in the window and watches.

An explosion rocks the tower. He laughs as it topples.

It crushes all the people below.
